Geojournalism in Amazonia

About

InfoAmazonia is a news organization that combines data, maps and geolocated reporting to tell stories about the planet’s largest continuous tropical forest in the nine countries of the region.

With a borderless view of the Amazon, we work collaboratively with local and international journalists and media outlets to promote innovative and in-depth investigations on environmental and social issues.

We are a non-profit organization based in Brazil and structured around three integrated areas of work: editorial production, creation of collaboration networks, and journalism education.

Mission
Our mission is to provide information about social and environmental issues in the Amazon in the nine countries that make up the region, in order to reveal the global importance of these territories.

Vision
A world where information and knowledge change the way we relate to the Amazon territories in their diversity and broaden everyone’s understanding of the Amazon’s role.

Values
Interconnection
InfoAmazonia speaks out about the largest tropical forest in the world, considering the territorial diversity beyond the borders that cross it, but without disregarding the politics that affect it.

Collaboration
We value collaboration over competition. We promote alliances with other media to investigate and report on a complex and transnational territory.

Diversity of knowledges
We integrate various Amazonian knowledges when producing our news reports and constructing the knowledges reported on and analyzed. We seek sources and experts who reflect that diversity.

Diversity in our team
We seek ethno-racial, geographic and gender diversity, so that our production represents well the plurality of views on the Amazon.

A healthy work environment
We cultivate a healthy work environment with equal pay.

Innovation
Innovation is present at InfoAmazonia at all times and it is reflected in several ways – from the tools we use to the way we tell stories.

Our work
Monitoring
We are committed to monitoring forest health indicators – such as deforestation, fires and mining – over time.

Geojournalism
We combine journalism with Earth sciences to foster knowledge about the territory and the relationship between the environment and human beings.

Transparency
We are transparent about our data sources, methodologies and processes, and we work to open databases about the Amazon.

Multidisciplinarity
We are multidisciplinary: from the conception of our projects, in our tools and reports, we involve experts from different areas to for the complexity of the Amazon territory and keep innovating in digital narratives.

Context and in-depth coverage
We provide context and in-depth journalistic coverage that informs the public debate, in order to get to the root causes of the topics reported.
